Hiking at the beautiful gorge of Vouraikos
Activity Description
Vouraikos is one of the most beautiful gorges in Greece and one of the best hiking trails one can enjoy the alternating landscapes, lush vegetation and pictures of the historic Odontotos. The name of the gorge is due to Voura, her daughter. Elikis and Jonah whom Hercules fell in love with and according to legend he opened the gorge so that he could reach the sea and meet her. In antiquity the river was almost full length, that is to say, within the territory of the Arcadian city of Kyntha, it was called Erasinos, only in the part that crossed the area of the ancient city of Voura and down to the sea, ie the bottom in its area. Aigialia was called Vouraikos.
The Vouraikos Gorge is approximately 20 kilometers long. The river flows through the gorge flanked by dense vegetation, steep cliffs, waterfalls and caves. The gorge also runs the Diakopto - Kalavryta toothpick which is a work of the Harilaos Trikoupis period and was inaugurated on March 10, 1896 by Theodoros Deligiannis.
Walking on the train rails at some point, you stumble right and left, at every turn of the line, unstoppable scary waterfalls, private galleries, abandoned stone-built houses with telegraphs turning us back in time, sculptured neat rocks !
