Kantili, this long narrow mountain in northwestern Evia, rises tall with its peaks reaching 1246 meters. Overlooking the Northern Euboean gulf, it carries in its history legends and myths that are lost in the depths of time. From the ancient Makistos, son of Athamas, to the watchtowers of the phryctoriums that are said to have relayed the news of the Fall of Troy to Mycenae, Kantili is a mountain full of mystery and hidden corners waiting to be discovered.
In this imposing landscape, the gorge of Alimachi stands out. Hidden in the heart of the mountain, it starts at an altitude of 300 meters and ends at the beach, where the sea meets the sky and our adventure ends. The gorge, full of imposing rocks and wild natural beauty, is ideal for those who seek the unknown and the unexplored. The gorge is linked to a local legend, according to which there was a woman named Alimachi who lived near the gorge. Although the details of the legend differ, Alimachi is presented as a strong and courageous woman, who was associated with local history and the region.
The name probably comes from this folk tradition, which has been passed down from generation to generation, and gives the gorge a more mythical dimension.
Our route
The route starts with an uphill hike, which may seem demanding, but the reward is priceless: the view from above, with the steep cliffs of the canyon forming a challenging natural path. 10 descents await us – the longest of which reaches 42 meters, testing our endurance and technique.
Alimachi Gorge is not suitable for beginners. Moderate to good physical condition is required, as well as agility in challenging, rocky terrain.

- Walk to the Entrance (uphill) – about 1.30 hours
- Walk to the Exit – about 20 minutes
- Not suitable for beginners, requires moderate to good fitness and good movement on very rocky terrain.
- The total duration of the activity will be 6-7 hours
*at the entrance there will also be a twenty-minute beginner's lesson.
