With a special hiking weekend in Kythnos we will welcome May. The mountains are good in spring but also our islands with their wonderful seas have their grace. Especially when we are talking about a period when the islands do not yet have many tourists.
Kythnos is a small island in the Western Cyclades that is only 2 hours away from Athens and the port of Lavrio by boat. The 1600 or so permanent residents of the island, with their excessive love for it, try to keep its authenticity and not to be spoiled by tourism. The island's Local guides will lead us to tour the Medieval Path that connects Loutra with the Castle of Oria and the ancient path of Vryokastro - Ancient Capital. The end of each hike will find us swimming in the most famous beaches of the island such as Apokrousi and Kolonas. Of course, our program could not miss the visit to the picturesque town of Kythnos with its wonderful alleys to take our souvenirs.

Description
In the northwestern part of the island, on a steep cliff, lies the ruins of the castle of the Medieval capital of Kythnos, the Castle of Oria. An area with a tremendous view of rich flora and fauna and with a special history that has been intertwined through the ages with pirates, kings and beautiful princesses.
Features:
The route starts above the settlement of Loutra giving a magnificent view of the eastern Cyclades. It then climbs up the dirt road until it reaches the junction going north towards the church of Agios Georgios and west towards the Castle. Then you can enjoy the view of the western Aegean Sea and the wild beauty of the landscape until you see the imposing rock with steep cliffs on which the Castle of Oria is built. The Castle of Oria was the seat of the Italian feudal family of the Gozzadini who dominated the island from 1337 to 1617 as vassals of the Venetian Duchy of Naxos. In 1292 Kythnos was plundered by the Catalans and throughout the Venetian and later the Turkish occupation, it suffered greatly from pirate raids.Today, only the ruins of walls and houses remain of the castle, while of the 100 churches it had in its heyday, only the churches of Keraleousa and Agia Triada survive. After the tour and the stories in the Castle, the route continues through the rural areas of the inhabitants with their abundance of fruit, ending at the port of Loutra.
