Hiking Leontito- The Monastery of Spiliotissa, Agrafa
Activity Description
In the center of mainland Greece and in that part of Thessaly Agrafa, lies the area of Argithea. The village of Leontito is one of the most beautiful mountain villages in the country, being the "alpine" secret of Agrafa, well hidden in the fir trees. It is built at an altitude of 1,000 meters at the foot of Mount Delidimi 2,163m. The village is characterized by high alpine peaks that delimit the horizon of the mountain village and the deep and steep ravines.
First, stop at the traditional watermill of Paliantonis and the water mill, and we continue by car to the cobbled square of the village where a thousand-year-old plane tree dominates, a trademark of the village, and the cafe of Papa-Christos. Georgios Karaiskakis, who spent his childhood here, used to rest on the plane tree. Later, as a general, he moved his headquarters to Leontito. A few meters away from the square we visit the old stone primary school which now functions as a library and hosts various cultural events in the summer months, next to it is the stone fountain, and a little higher, in the fir trees the patron saint of the village Agios Charalambos, with the characteristic. It has been there since 1882, well preserved and recently renovated.
Then we walk the path of the pilgrims ending at the Monastery of Panagia Spiliotissa, a historical monument, where the miraculous icon is kept. Built on top of a 900-meter cliff, dedicated to Zoodochos Pigi, it looks like it is hanging in the void, causing awe to the visitor. In this route, we will see from above the Argitheatika mountains, Karava, and the valley that crosses the Petriliotis river. The monk Nektarios will be waiting for us in the monastery for a short tour, we can enter the small monastery.
