Program:
- You will meet your guide at Eleftheria Square, right in front of Astoria Capsis Hotel, at 08:30 to start your visit to the Heraklion Archaeological Museum – the second largest museum in Greece, following the Museum of Athens.
- The tour begins with an introduction to the oldest discoveries from Crete dating back to 6000 BC and then moves on to the fascinating Minoan palaces of Knossos, Festos, Mallia, and Zakros.
- The tour continues with objects from cemeteries, shrines, and houses and ends with the Minoan frescoes of Knossos.
- Around 10:30, after concluding the Archaeological Museum visit, we will embark on an exploration of the historical city center of Heraklion. Accompanied by your knowledgeable tour host, you'll discover Heraklion's prominent landmarks, immersing yourself in the city's rich history as you travel through time. Uncover the captivating past and present of this city, where the blend of old and new creates a unique atmosphere. Notably, Heraklion was where the 7th labor of Hercules took place and is renowned as the birthplace of the esteemed painter El Greco and the esteemed writer Nikos Kazantzakis.
- During the tour, you'll hear intriguing stories about Heraklion's eventful past, and you'll have the opportunity to visit legendary churches, fountains, and monuments such as Saint Minas Cathedral and Lion's Square (where you'll savor the chance to taste Traditional Cretan Mpougatsa and raki). The journey continues with visits to Tito's Church, Heraklion Town Hall, Kule's Fortress, and other magnificent Venetian architectural marvels.
- Our excursion concludes at 13:00, as we return in front of Astoria Capsis Hotel.
