Get to know the history and the beautiful landscape of the town of Kalavryta.
Explore one of Greece's most popular ski towns. At the foot of Helmos, the historic town of Kalavryta, with its stone houses, picturesque alleys, and traditional market, welcomes all visitors looking for nature combined with culture. We meet our guide at the station of the famous Odontotos, the railway station (built in 1896), which covers 22 km between Kalavryta and Diakoptos.
Afterward, we will walk along the main paved street of Kalavryta to visit the Municipal Holocaust Museum of Kalavryta. After the museum, we go up to the World War 2 sacrifice monument on a small hill just outside the town of Kalavryta. Our next stop will be to try a variety of local products. The traditional local sweet called Rose Sugar has been produced for over 100 years and its recipe remains a secret. We will taste the Achaean drink called Ventura and the popular dessert wine called Mavrodafni. To accompany the wine we will try some of the local cheeses.
Walking towards the central square of the city we will visit the beautiful church of the Dormition of the Virgin. One of the two clocks in the church towers has been stopped since 1943 at 14:34 when German troops killed the villagers during World War 2.
To complete our program, we will enjoy a Greek coffee in the cafeteria of the Kalavryta train station.
